Our final installment for Falling into Health is with Primary Care Physician,Dr. Shep Dunlevie of Piedmont MDVIP, Atlanta, GA. This week I asked Dr. Dunlevie what 3 things he wished his 50 and up patients knew about their health. His responses were quick and emphatic:
- Use Sensible Caution when it comes to COVID and being in public places: Current cases of Covid are hitting adults over 40 hard. He is particularly concerned about the frequent and severe “Long Hauler” effects he is seeing.
- Get your colonoscopies: Colon cancer is on the rise and currently a leading cause of cancer death for men and women. The American Cancer Society recently lowered the advised baseline screening age for Colonoscopies to 45 years of age. Depending on your doctor’s recommendation and family history, it is then every 10 years. PS- the dreaded “drink” is now in better flavors!
- Eat a well-balanced diet and keep cardio and strength exercise constant throughout your life: These behaviors can have a profound impact on your later years. He would love to see all of his patients doing guided strength exercise a minimum of 2x a week in addition to cardio from their 40’s to their 80’s. It is never too late to start but the earlier you start the larger the impact on your future self. (YAY VIVO!)
