Vivo teams up with AARP’s Senior Planet to offer strength training classes nationwide

Opportunities for older adults to learn and grow continue to increase with the proliferation of technology, and Vivo is at the leading edge of this movement. One exciting collaboration furthering this growth is Vivo’s recent work with Older Adults Technology Services (OATS) from AARP to offer strength training classes to older adults. With the start of the new year, these options are set to expand even further.

Founded in 2004, OATS is a social impact organization with a mission to “harness the power of technology to change the way we age.” OATS aims to empower older adults with the tools and training necessary to take advantage of today’s technology and use it to enrich their lives.

Their flagship program, Senior Planet from AARP, offers engaging classes online and in-person at six centers and numerous licensed locations across the United States. Classes cover topics such as finance, wellness, fitness, computers, and technology.

To accommodate the lives of busy older adults, Vivo and OATS have been working together over the past year to create three distinct strength training classes.

1. Large Group Follow-Along Classes

Vivo offers “Saturday Morning Boost” a large group class for Senior Planet that, starting this year, will be offered twice a month, every other Saturday. The 45-minute follow-along workout with a Vivo trainer focuses on functional movements that help improve strength, flexibility, and mobility. The classes are fun, free, and easy to join, typically attracting several hundred participants each session.

“These classes are a great introduction to the benefits of Vivo,” says Eric Levitan, founder and CEO of Vivo. “Our goal is to encourage older adults to take that first step toward improved overall well-being through increased strength, better balance, and greater independence.”

2. Boot Camp

Another option is Vivo’s Boot Camp series for Senior Planet. This is an eight-week mini-course that is perfect for someone getting ready for an upcoming trip or looking to improve their balance or establish a healthy activity routine. Offered twice a year, in May and September, this strength-training course was successfully piloted last year and is being offered again this year. With one 45-minute class once a week for two months, participants who complete 75% of the series receive a certificate of completion.

3. Senior Planet Center-Based Classes

And lastly, for those lucky enough to live near a Senior Planet center, Vivo offers an eight-week series whereby participants meet at their nearest center and workout together with a Vivo instructor joining the group live online. Last fall, Vivo offered a center-based class in Miami, Florida. These smaller classes are capped at roughly 15 people, and participants receive more individualized attention than the larger follow-along group classes. In the coming year, Vivo is working with Senior Planet to offer six versions of these center-based classes throughout the United States.

“We are grateful to work with Vivo to bring their fitness programming to Senior Planet participants across the country,” says Deirdre Lee, Director of Virtual Program Experiences. “We encourage all older adults to experience a class for themselves and discover the positive impact that a bit of movement can have on health and well-being.”

As the new year is officially underway, Vivo and OATS will continue working together to offer a range of expert-led strength-training classes designed specifically for older adults seeking to embrace health and fitness in 2026.
